Texas Holdem Insider Secret Strategy
7:
"Betting to Win"
The art of betting
is what separates the truly good players from the not-so-good
players. It’s what Texas Hold’em is all about.
Below are three
simple guidelines to betting:
Follow these
guidelines and you will always keep your opponents on their
toes. They will never know what you’re doing. Whether
you’re coming or going. And believe me, that’s
a good thing.
Always consider
the size of the pot when betting. I never understand why
some players insist on bluffing when the pot is small. It’s
not worth it.
Vary
Your Raises
The best players
will raise with all kinds of hands. Whatever and whenever
it feels right they do it.
The biggest advantage
this brings is that the opponents never know what’s
going on with you. They’re forced to guess what you
may have. And that’s exactly what we want. They will
never put you on a hand.
Every once in
a while someone will come over top of you when you raise
with a marginal hand. That’s okay. Why? Because you’ll
fold! Remember…fold, never chase. However, what happens
when they come over top and you’ve got a great starting
hand? Can you say trapped!
Feeler
Bets
A feeler bet
is exactly what it sounds like. You’re betting to
get a feel of the table, a hand, a bluff or whatever else
you may need to “feel out.”
Keep your feeler
bets small. You just want a taste of what’s going
on. You don’t want to commit to something that’s
going to get you into trouble.
If your feeler
bet works and you feel someone has a stronger hand and they
raise you, then fold. It’s as simple as that.
It’s important
to understand that if you simply check your way through
you may never get a feel for the table.
Check/Raise
If you want to
see people get pissed off check/raise them. Now not everyone
is like that. Actually, it doesn’t bother me one iota.
However, for
some it is like playing against the anti-Christ. They can’t
stand it. I love doing it because it keeps them guessing.
They may get upset and then what happens? They’re
not thinking clearly and may place a big bet or go all-in.
I love it! I’ve put more people out by check/raising
then anything else.
When I’m
check/raised it makes me think twice. But I don’t
get upset. In fact, it helps me maintain a closer focus
on what’s going on.
Quick
Tip
Check/Raise if you want to really see fireworks at a table.
However, when done right you can take advantage of your
opponent’s hostility.
Stealing
Pots
When you get
a good starting hand like AK or KQ does it ever seem like
you can never win these hands due to a poor flop.
Try this…
Let’s say
you got KQ. Throw out a large bet, not just a small one
that others will call simply to see the flop. That’s
not what you want. The majority of the time when placing
a large bet here most everyone will fold.
Then comes the
flop, 4, 10, 7. This is usually not much help to anyone.
So what do you do? Place a huge bet. Why? Because your opponent
will put you on a pocket pair while they have nothing. They’ll
fold.
There you go.
You just stole a pot.
Every once in
a while someone will call you or go over the top. Then it
is time to reevaluate and move forward cautiously. The bottom
line is to maximize your winnings you must be aggressive.
Keep
‘em Guessing
It’s vital
to be able to keep your opponents on their toes. To keep
them guessing on what they heck you’re doing and what
you’re going to do next.
When you can
do this successfully you will have a tremendous advantage.
So, how do you
keep them guessing?
By changing your
bets. Playing a variety of hands. Bluffing. Showing cards
when you bluff and when you don’t. There are many
ways that you can keep your opponent guessing.
The key is to
find out what is going to fit in your style of play. Play
low buy-in games and find your “guessing” technique
by testing different things. If it doesn’t feel right
don’t do it in the future. But when it does and it
works…awesome! You’re on your way.
